Formula USERA Completes Exciting Double Weekend at Lime Rock Park
15 August 2009

FCC at LRP Formula USERA Presented by Motion Dynamics joined the NASCAR Camping World Series this weekend as part of the 2009 Mohegan Sun 200 at historic Lime Rock Park in upstate Connecticut. Formula USERA ran double 30 lap sprint races prior to, and following the NCWS main event Saturday.

Teams practiced Saturday morning and qualifying for race 1 was held Friday afternoon. The grid for race 2 was established based on the results of race 1. During the two practice sessions, it appeared that the two Jagermeister team Formula Continental cars driven by Dennis McCarthy and Doug Rocco would be the cars to beat this weekend. Both Jagermeister cars were running times about a half second a lap faster than the other runners. At the end of qualifying, the grid was set with Doug Rocco in his Jagermeister/Sidney Frank Import Formula Continental on pole, followed by Matt Schneider in his Formula Enterprises in second, and Rocco's teammate Dennis McCarthy in his Jagermeister/Sidney Frank Importing Formula Continental in third. Rounding out the top of the grid was Shawn Morrison's Motion Dynamics/USERA/KML Racing Formula Enterprises, Joe Sammut's Motion Dynamic's Formula Enterprises, Hilton Tallman's Air Adventures/Bread Basket Bakery Formula Continental and Steven Dweck's Formula Continental.

Schneider would grab the lead at the start of race one and while he and Rocco had a spirited battle, Schneider would lead all 30 laps for a flag-to-flag victory in his first USERA race start. Rocco fought hard in second place until his engine expired on lap 21, handing second place to Morrison. Sammut assumed third place and that would be the finish order at the checker. Tallman, McCarthy, Dweck and Rocco rounded out the stop seven.

The initial race start was waved off when a couple of the drivers tried to start racing before the series starter displayed the green flag. The race started on lap two with Morrison crossing the line mere inches in front of Schneider, but Schneider who would take the lead and never look back. Sammut was in third and being pressured hard by McCarthy who would take over the third spot on the podium on lap four. On lap 16, Rocco, driving a backup car, lost a rear tire exiting turn 10, spinning into the tires at the bottom of the fast downhill at turn 11 bringing out a full course caution. As the restart approached, Dweck misjudged the restart and made contact with the rear of Tallman's car, forcing a wave off of the restart. Both Dweck and Tallman were able to limp into the pit lane and retired from damage. The race would conclude with Schneider taking his second win of the weekend, followed closely by Morrison in second and McCarthy in third. Sammut, Tallman, Dweck and Rocco rounded out the top seven.

"I would like to thank Jay Motorsports for giving me a perfect car to race every weekend. I couldn't do it without those guys," said Matt Schneider. "I would also like to thank Ken Grammar and everyone at USERA for putting on a great event, and Shawn Morrison and all the folks at Motion Dynamics for their hospitality. I had a great weekend!"

"I love racing at Lime Rock Park and Matt did a great job showing us around here today in both races," said Shawn Morrison. "I really thought that the Jagermeister Formula Continental cars would be on the top steps of the podium as they were really fast in qualifying. It was great to see the Formula Enterprises cars come out on top. Those cars are a lot of fun to drive and being that they are a spec car the racing can be really close. I was having an under steer issue with our car in the first race and made a few changes for the second race. I had a few shots at Matt in the second race to try and get by but he was just to smooth and quick. Thanks to USERA, Lime Rock Park, SCCA Enterprises and Motion Dynamics for putting together such a great event."

"Despite the mechanical gremlins we had to contend with, Doug set a new Formula Continental track record and my third place finish put big smiles on our faces," said Dennis McCarthy. "We want to thank our great sponsors at Sidney Frank Inc. who made the race possible for us and also USERA for running a very professional event. We look forward to competing with USERA in the future."

"I want to thank USERA and Motion Dynamics for putting on such a great event," said Joe Sammut. "I also want to thank the crew of Motion Dynamics for preparing such a great car for me and for their overall support this weekend."

Schneider's win in race 1 also set a new Formula USERA track record, and reset the Lime Rock Park track record for the Formula Enterprises car with a 50.638. Rocco's fast lap of 50.649, while just missing the USERA record, did reset the Lime Rock Park track record for Formula Continental.

"SCCA Enterprises was proud of the speed and reliability of our FE cars; which allowed them to prevail in this exciting heads up challenge," said Erik Skirmants, President of SCCA Enterprises. "The 50 second laps and close competition kept the fans interested and on their feet for both races. We want to thank the racers who came for showing their true competitive natures and also want to thank Ken Grammer and his staff for showing us a prototype of what we feel can be a truly successful series".
